About

Why I Created Horizon Mastery.

Thirty years. Dozens of strategies. The same failure, repeated.

Over three decades leading financial institutions across Southern Africa, I watched the same pattern unfold with remarkable consistency. Organisations would invest heavily in strategy — rigorous analysis, expert consultants, well-crafted plans. The strategy would be sound. The logic would be clear. And then, in execution, it would quietly fall apart.

Not because the strategy was wrong. Because the leadership behaviours required to execute it were not there.

I saw boards approve strategies that their executive teams were not aligned behind. I saw executive teams cascade plans that their organisations did not understand. I saw leaders who were technically brilliant and personally capable — but who had never been given the tools to translate strategic intent into the kind of consistent, aligned behaviour that execution actually demands.

That gap — between what organisations intend and what they actually do — became the defining question of my career.

The Turning Point

The problem was never the strategy. It was always the leadership.

When I returned to doctoral research, I was not looking for an academic credential. I was looking for answers. What does the evidence actually say about why leadership fails under the pressure of execution? What distinguishes leaders who can hold complexity and bring others with them from those who cannot? The research confirmed what experience had suggested — and gave me the rigorous framework to do something about it.

Why Horizon Mastery

I founded Horizon Mastery Consultancy because I believed there was a better way to work with executive leaders — one that combined the depth of evidence-informed methodology with the credibility of someone who had actually led at that level.

Not a coaching programme. Not a training intervention. A genuine advisory practice — the kind of thinking partner that senior leaders rarely have access to, and almost always need.

The name reflects the work. Mastery is not a destination. It is the ongoing, disciplined pursuit of excellence in the face of complexity. And the horizon — the point where strategy meets the future — is precisely where that mastery is tested.
